This is such good advice. Saved this one as I’d imagine there will be times I’ll want (need) to come back and re-read this one. Lot of this could be applied across different professions.
I avoid all these treacherous pitfalls by simply avoiding friendships. Problem solved. Leaves more time for writing! And, of course, there's dinner by myself, and movie night...uhm...alone, and playing pool against...against myself. Uhm...actually...hold on a moment.
I know this barely has anything to do with me (since I'm an indie writer who mostly spends time interacting with other writers on instagram), but I like this so much that I'm going to save these and do my best to commit them to memory. And live them of course. I already scrapped a planned post that would have me an object of pity (wasn't my intent, but I'd rather not risk it).
Saving this post and sharing it with my close writing friends! You captured the nuance so perfectly, and I am adopting all of your rules because they hit the nail on the head for me. Thank you!!
Thank you! One of my writer friends read this post and said the idea is mostly that we should try not to take out our insecurities on each other. It’s so difficult to avoid that sometimes! I keep trying!
Parker, wow, this was so grounding and honest and wholesome. It came at a much needed time in my life. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and vulnerability with us!! I can already tell I’ll be returning to this in difficult moments
Thank you so much for that comment, Noelle. It can be so difficult to be grounded while in such a tough industry. But I think it’s only through the hard experiences that I’ve gained any wisdom. Wishing you the best!
Forgot to put this in the initial comment but the line “you are not a god. You do not subsist on praise” is going to go with me to the grave. Hits in the best way

This is good truth.

Wonderful post, Parker. Creativity is the key, and the fact that there will always be room on the bookshelf.
Truly tbr seems always to need more books, so please keep writing, everyone! 😂
Thanks for reading, Janet.
Thank you so much for this article, Parker. These conversations are fascinating but also often scary to approach, thank you for creating space.
These friendships can be complicated but some of my dearest friends are other writers. 💙
