First, an announcement:
We’ve hit 1,000 subscribers! Thank you for joining me at The Writer’s Attic. You and 999 other people have really made my day. :)
Now that we’ve hit this milestone, I’m reflecting on what I’ve enjoyed about writing this newsletter and what I’d like to try in the future. And I’d like to get your input!
Here are some ideas of features I’m thinking of trying…
Query letter critiques. Lots of people have entered my giveaways for query letter critiques. Should I critique queries on The Writer’s Attic? This would be a lot of work for me, so I would be able to offer this feature only to paid subscribers (which also means query critiques would be kept behind a paywall, which might be draw for those who want a little more privacy).
The Book Breakdown. What makes a story work? I break down a published novel to show its most appealing and effective elements.
The Writer’s Oracle. Writers tend to be at their best when they write the kind of stories they love to read. Tell me seven books you love, and why you love them, and I'll write a post in which I recommend what kind of story you should write.
A writing class. I’ve taught several popular online writing courses in the past. Would you like to take a 4- or 6-week writing course right here on The Writer’s Attic? This feature would be available for paid subscribers.
I’d love to hear from you! What would you like to see more of in future newsletters? Vote now by answering four quick questions…
Or leave a comment on this post. Thank you for being part of The Writer’s Attic!
One more request: if you enjoy The Writer’s Attic, will you consider becoming a paid subscriber? It really supports my efforts to write a dependable, high-quality newsletter.
Paid subscribers receive…
Access to paywalled “workshop” sections of posts about writing advice, in which I workshop a novel, TV show, or movie to show you how to apply a specific writing technique. (See the end of this post: Use This Query Template That Led to 4 Agent Offers.)
Occasional, full-color pdf guides to help you explore writing techniques, like creating ironic hooks.
Access to 5-Page Book Club, in which we read five pages of a novel and discuss what we can learn as writers. (See this post: 5-Page Book Club: The Guest List by Lucy Foley)
Whether you’re a paid subscriber or a free subscriber, please know that I’m happy you’re here and I’m rooting for you as you write. Thanks for being part of The Writer’s Attic!

I really enjoy the Book Breakdown! I think it's gold for all writers, whether emerging or established! So fascinating... I always learn something from your insights.
